My $40,000 idea for The Lip Lab

Where it all started
Tara had just purchased The Lip Lab Perth, a business that creates custom lipsticks and makeup perfectly tailored to your skin tones, makeup style, and preferred finish. Whether it’s a light or heavy foundation, matte or dewy, The Lip Lab mixes your makeup to the exact colour and formula you love to wear.
Tara booked a 1-hour Brand Accelerator strategy session with me to brainstorm ways to quickly generate revenue for her new business to get fast sales.
During our session, I gave her a range of easy wins and marketing ideas, but the standout idea was the “Grab and Go” makeup kits.
Here’s how the idea took shape.
My Big Idea
The Lip Lab was heavily focused on selling custom-blended lipsticks, but they actually offered so much more including custom-blended foundation, concealer, blush, bronzer, lip gloss, and lipstick.
As soon as Tara mentioned this, the idea hit me… instead of just selling one lipstick, why not create an entire makeup kit at a fixed price point?
This kit would include everything a woman needs to do her makeup on the run. Also, once they have one kit, why not sell them on the idea of a second “convenience – never get caught out” kit that they could leave in their desk at the office, in the car or carry in their handbag for those busy days (I know I needed this when I worked at Lavan for evening events). The kits were also compact and light to carry.
Tara loved the idea, she put together the kits and we developed a strong messaging strategy which will continue to evolve with the business.

They made the reordering super convenient as you could do it online and your colours were kept on file. It’s a win-win! No more trips to the store or wasting money on makeup that isn’t right for your skin. From $59, the “Grab and Go kits increased the average sale to $380.
The Christmas Launch
We decided to launch the kits in time for Christmas where there is maximum demand and positioned them as the perfect gift. They were able to sell 100 kits generating them more than $40,000 sales.
This not only boosted Tara’s revenue but also turned into the go-to product for her business increasing the average sale by 600%.
The “Grab and Go” kits are a perfect example of turning a simple idea into a revenue-generating strategy. In just 60 minutes, I gave Tara a fresh perspective and actionable ideas that led to fast results.
